It’s been a while! Back in October, I had a very tough day at the Mohawk Hudson River Marathon. Conditions were extremely humid and warm, but I felt great and was steady at ~6:42/mile pace past mile 20, on pace for my sub-3 hour/BQ goal. Then, before 21, my right hamstrings started cramping and shut down. My right quad and foot started doing the same shortly after. I felt fine otherwise, but my right leg just wouldn’t “go”. I tried to stretch it out but no luck. I walked and hopped the last 5 miles and was able to finish in 3:36. While I am extremely frustrated with the cramping situation and my finish time, I was happy with my effort and how I felt during the race. I committed to the pace early, felt strong, and really feel that I was well prepared for breaking 3 hours. Sometimes you just have a tough break on a tough day.. I adjusted my fueling plan when I saw the forecast, but wouldn’t have really changed much of my strategy otherwise, even if I had a chance to do it all again.
